"Green Hill Zone" is a track originating from Sonic the Hedgehog and composed by Masato Nakamura. It is the background music for the level of the same name.

In Sonic the Hedgehog

"Green Hill Zone" is the first level theme in Sonic the Hedgehog, playing during all 3 "acts" of Green Hill Zone. If the player acquires the speed shoes, the track will increase in tempo for the duration of the power up.

A portion of "Green Hill Zone" plays as part of the staff roll medley at the end of the game.

It is track 81 in the sound test of Sonic the Hedgehog.

Composition

Nakamura's original demo for the song was featured in the 2011 official soundtrack of the game. "Green Hill Zone" was the first track composed for Sonic the Hedgehog.[1]

Other

"Green Hill Zone" can briefly be heard in a 1991 United States commercial for Sonic the Hedgehog.[2] A 1991 Japanese commercial for the game featured a unique arrangement of the track.[3]

A piano cover of "Green Hill Zone" by Jon Batiste plays during the 2020 Sonic the Hedgehog film. The song "Up on the Green Hill from Sonic the Hedgehog Green Hill Zone - Masado and Miwasco Version -" by Dreams Come True was used as the main theme song for the sequel film; it is the English version of the band's 2021 song "Tsugi no Se~no! De - On the Green Hill -," a vocal version of "Green Hill Zone."
